Event Details

The official countdown to Lights On, First Light launches Vivid Sydney 2025 with a moving celebration of First Nations culture and Calling Country. Set against the iconic backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge at Campbells Cove, this special welcome ceremony brings to life the rich traditions of the Gadigal people and neighbouring nations through vibrant song, dance, and Language.

This year’s theme is Dream—a vision of light, harmony and a future in balance. In the words of Vivid Sydney’s First Nations Advisor, Rhoda Roberts AO:

"Dream holds another depth for First Nations people. It is a sacred space where the past, present, and future meet—a reflection we call the Dreaming. It’s a timeless act, as ancient as the earth and as universal as life itself."

NAISDA dancers will open First Light with an energetic, spirit-stirring performance honouring Yolngu culture and the first star of the night, symbolising a creator-spirit. As the sky deepens to dusk, the powerful voices and movements of our First Nations cast will echo through the Sydney basin, celebrating Country and culture.

First Light is an invitation for all to connect with the ancient stories, songlines and traditions that shaped this land. It’s a moment of respect, reflection and unity.

This special opening celebration will launch Vivid Sydney 2025. It will be broadcast across the Light Walk on opening night and an edited version will appear on screens across the footprint every night of the festival before Lights On!
