Destination NSW Cookie Notice
How do Destination NSW use cookies?
Destination NSW uses cookies and similar technologies to enhance your browsing experience, analyse website performance, personalise content, deliver relevant ads and work with partners to improve our marketing efforts. This notice explains the types of cookies we use, the information we collect using cookies, how that information is used, and how you can control the collection of cookie data.
You can manage your cookie preferences at any time via the ‘Manage Cookies’ link in the website footer. Please note that any consent to accept or to decline cookies is limited to this website only and not to other NSW Government websites or any other websites which may be hyperlinked to from our websites.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are saved on your computer or mobile browser to track information about your website visit. Along with similar technologies such as local storage, pixels, and tags, cookies help ensure your browsing experience is smooth and seamless.
There are two broad types of cookies:
- First party cookies. These cookies are served directly by us to your device.
- Third party cookies. These cookies either collect data on behalf of us (like analytics or other technical service providers) or also collect data for their own purposes (like advertising and social media cookies).
Cookies can remain on your computer or mobile device for different periods of time. Some cookies are session cookies, which are temporary and only exist only while your browser is open and are deleted once you close your browser. Other cookies are persistent cookies, meaning that they survive after your browser is closed for a defined period (depending on the browser), or until they are manually cleared from a user’s browser storage. They can be used by the website to recognise your computer or mobile device when you open your browser and browse the Internet again.
What types of cookies does Destination NSW use and how?
Essential Cookies (Always On)
Essential cookies are necessary for the website to function properly and cannot be turned off. These cookies enable core features such as security, network management, and accessibility. They ensure the website performs as expected every time you visit. While they cannot be disabled, they do not store any personal information.
Examples of use:
- Remembering your consent preferences using Tealium, ensuring that your cookie choices are applied throughout your browsing experience.
- Other essential cookies are used to store user preferences, enhance website security, and improve page load times. These cookies are required for our websites to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of our websites may not function properly as a result.
Measurement Cookies (Always On)
These cookies allow us to count visits and review key traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our site and cannot be turned off. They do not store directly personally identifiable information but are based on uniquely identifying your browser and internet device.
Examples of use:
- Destination NSW uses Google Analytics and Tealium to measure how people use our websites. These platforms gather information about website usage by means of cookies which collect anonymous data. The information gathered is then used to create reports about the use of our websites. Persistent cookies used by Google Analytics includes ‘_ga’ and ‘_ga_7FXDE7HLZF'. For more information about Google Analytics visit the Google Marketing Platform webpage and you can read Google’s Privacy Policy.
Functional Cookies (Optional)
We analyse how you use our site to make it easier for you to find the content you want. The cookies may be set by us or by third party providers whose services we have added to our pages. If you do not allow these cookies then some services may not function properly.
Examples of use:
- Destination NSW uses Tealium to build audiences based on users’ interactions with this website’s digital properties. These audiences are then used to deliver personalised messaging via on-site content, advertising platforms and email where available. For more information about Tealium visit the Tealium website and for details of Tealium’s privacy notice visit https://tealium.com/privacy/
- Destination NSW uses Visual Website Optimizer (VWO) to run A/B tests of content on web pages to improve the digital user experience. For more information about Visual Website Optimizer visit the VWO website, and for details on VWO’s data privacy policy, read the VWO Data Privacy information.
- Drupal is used to authenticate users and suppress specific features based on previous interactions. For more information about Drupal visit the Drupal website, and for details read Drupal’s Privacy Policy.
- Maxmind is deployed on this website to find the user's location and serve localized content to them. For example, serving Nearby Accommodation to interstate or overseas visitors when viewing a product page. For more information about Maxmind visit the Maxmind website and for details of Maxmind’s privacy policy, read their Commitment to Security.
Advertising Cookies (Optional)
We use advertising cookies to deliver relevant ads and marketing to you based on your interests and interactions with our site. These cookies help us limit the number of times you see an ad, measure the effectiveness of our campaigns, and improve your overall experience. With advertising cookies enabled, we aim to make sure that the ads you see are meaningful and aligned with what matters to you.
Examples of use:
Destination NSW uses advertising cookies from vendors including Google, Meta (the company which owns Facebook and Instagram), TikTok, and the below vendors for the purposes of targeted online advertising. For more information on the vendors identified above including how they place and use cookies, please view their privacy policies at:
- Google Ads: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- Meta: https://www.facebook.com/privacy/policy/
- TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/legal/page/row/privacy-policy/en
- LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/legal/privacy-policy
These cookies enable Destination NSW and third parties with whom we may share data (such as our advertising, industry and marketing partners, service providers and customers) to recognise your browser or device and serve you with advertising content that is more relevant to your interests, while also allowing us to better understand the effectiveness of online advertising in generating website visits, ticket sales to events, or leads to New South Wales tourism operators or industry partners.
Anonymous data from advertising cookies including browsing history and practices may be provided to third parties to facilitate online advertising (including on platforms such as Facebook or Instagram) for the purposes of promoting tourism in New South Wales.
Advertising cookies such as those detailed above will not load unless you consent to receiving Advertising cookies.
Data Matching Cookies (Optional)
If consented to, and without directly identifying you, we share certain data with trusted partners to deliver more relevant content and refine our marketing efforts. This may include sharing anonymous information with analytics providers, advertising networks, and other partners. We take your privacy seriously and ensure all data shared is handled securely and in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
Examples of use:
Destination NSW uses AdFixus to create an anonymous identifier called the Adfixus ID which is used to allow us to better understand the number of visitors across the Sydney.com, VisitNSW.com & VividSydney.com websites. This helps us deliver personalised content to users without the need for user authentication. This ID is stored in the persistent ‘afx_profile’ cookie. The first time this cookie is set, your browser will send a request to the domain afx.adfixus.com to generate the ID. You may notice an additional tab on your browser opening and then closing again while this process takes place. For more information about Adfixus visit the Adfixus website and for details of Adfixus’ privacy statement you can read the Adfixus Privacy Statement.
How can I manage, reject, and/or delete cookies?
If you do not want information collected using cookies, then you can select the option “Essential Cookies Only”. If you do consent to the use of non-essential cookies, you can choose whether you consent to some or all cookies. You can manage your cookie preferences at any time via the ‘Manage Cookies’ link in the website footer.
There is also a simple procedure in most internet browsers that allows you to deny or accept the cookie feature.
Managing cookies in your browser
If you wish to restrict, block or delete cookies from this website – or any other website - you can use your browser to do this. Each browser is different so check the ‘Help’ menu of your browser to learn how to change your cookie preferences. Please bear in mind that if you do this, certain personalised features of this website cannot be provided to you. You should be aware that any preferences will be lost if you delete cookies.
Managing your cookie preferences may work slightly differently on smart phone browsers. This is usually done through your phone settings; managing cookies across your whole device.
Cookies that have been set in the past
If you have disabled one or more cookies, we will stop using this information for purposes other than what you have consented to. Cookies may remain on your device but Destination NSW and our partners will stop tracking your activity on this website. If you wish to delete cookies, please refer to the Help menu in your browser.
What about other tracking technologies?
When you are on this website you may notice that there is content from other websites - for example a video from YouTube or a business locator map from Google. We add this content to improve the user experience. Some of the marketing technology platforms we utilise make use of tracking technologies such as JavaScript or pixels which can allow data to be passed from one platform to another with or without the use of cookies. Opting out of any category of cookie will also result in relevant scripts or pixels not being loaded.
Why am I still receiving advertising from Destination NSW?
Please note that if you opt out of Advertising cookies this does not mean that you won’t see ads from Destination NSW. It means that the advertising you see will not be as relevant or customised to you. We have provided links in the Advertising Cookies section of this page to some of the specific partners we work with who set cookies on our websites, and therefore on your computer, each of which has instructions on how to opt out of their cookies.
Please remember that if you choose to opt out of targeted advertising from a specific company it only applies to the web browser on the device you are using. You will therefore need to follow the same process on every device you use or different web browser that you use to exercise the same choice.
