Sydney just can’t seem to get enough of Nils Frahm, and with good reason: the German composer’s sonic alchemy of neo-classical soundscapes, ambient textures and atmospheric electronica has made him a breathtaking, unpredictable live performer, as likely to play piano with toilet brushes as he is to twiddle the knobs on his ever-present bank of synths. Returning for the first time since 2019, Frahm will appear in the Joan Sutherland Theatre for the world premiere performance of his forthcoming global tour, where he’ll debut the never-before-heard Music For Sydney.
A classically-trained musician who moves between the worlds of experimental, ambient and electronica, Frahm has been dazzling audiences since his glitchy 2005 debut Streichelfisch, releasing a series of acclaimed solo piano albums (including 2009’s Wintermusik), the atmospheric, synth-heavy classic Felt (2011), live recordings and soundtracks. The ambitious All Melody arrived in 2018, followed by the live concert Tripping with Nils Frahm (2019) and the recent, intimate compilation Old Friends, New Friends (2021). Frahm is also the founder of World Piano Day, celebrated on the 88th day of each year.
Frahm made his Sydney Opera House debut with three rapturously received, sold-out shows at Vivid LIVE in 2014, and he has since returned to play the Concert Hall in 2017 and 2019. Whether drawing on electronica, ambient, or classical piano, no two Nils Frahm performances are ever the same. We can’t wait to see what he’s cooked up for us next.
