In 2022, Sydney Harbour Bridge celebrates its 90th birthday. As one of Australia’s most loved and photographed landmarks, this enduring icon has become a symbol of our modernity, connectivity and of our city itself.
In a salute to the arch that has defined the city and the nation, the Historical Archive and Digitisation Team at Transport for NSW are working their way through a photographic archive spanning over 100 years to reveal the stories and experiences of the people and places the bridge connects across our great state. For the first time in its history, the archive is being delivered back to the public through the Historical Archive online library, and carefully selected images will be celebrated and shared throughout Vivid Sydney 2022.
Skillfully and lovingly photographed by Michael Pratt and Nino Marshall, the image collection is now being digitised by a team of dedicated experts lead by Sarah May Ryan and Marcus Boyd.
Animated by Spinifex, the images are shown on all four pylons of the bridge. You'll see them screened from 6pm each night following Sharing the Same Life Essence.
The audio for this installation will be available on Cinewav. Before you arrive at Vivid Sydney, download the Cinewav app, get your audio ticket and press PLAY. More information on how Cinewav works can be found here.
