London-based saxophonist and composer, Nubya Garcia, is one of the leading forces behind the resurgence of jazz-influenced sounds in the UK and across the globe. Her appearance at the Cellar Door as part of our Vivdi Sydney 2018 program is set to be one of the shows of the year, hands down. If there was ever an artist to best personify our monthly event Jazz! Attack!...then Nubya is it!
Raised in a creative environment built by a set of Caribbean parents, her brand of afro-tinged jazz has made her a key component in a string of new and established groups: from work with legendary jungle producer and toaster, Congo Natty, through to her own works as part of the Theon Cross Trio, six-piece Maisha, and the Nérija septet.
Spring 2017 saw her release her first solo project via forward-thinking imprint, Jazz re:freshed. The project — which explores the common ground between progressive jazz, hip hop and soulful, groove led rhythms — cementing her credentials on the global jazz scene.
Nubya will be joined by Midnight Swim label boss Tom Studdy amongst a number of fresh emerging talent from the Sydney contemporary jazz movement.
