Light Houses draws on the welcoming symbolism of lighthouses and their capacity to chart a course to a safe haven. The work is a creation by TAFE NSW students and is inspired by the role lighthouses played over Australia’s history in welcoming successive waves of immigrants to our shores.
The students have tapped their own disciplines and career skills — as well as their diverse cultural backgrounds — to design, construct and illuminate various lighthouses with colour, images and movement. Some designs also incorporate Aboriginal perspectives.
Light Houses is displayed in the Royal Botanic Garden and is a great example of how this multi-disciplined education provider works with industry. Students from across arts, design, music, digital and live production disciplines worked together on this ‘real-world’ project to create an ‘unreal’ outcome.
