Legacy of Landscape is a hewn sandstone mass that, suspended above a laneway in The Rocks, appears to defy gravity. A warm glow emanates from within, conjuring an image of a campfire in a cave.

The work is a comment on the changing face of the city. Sandstone is a fundamental part of Sydney’s identity; the warm, soft, honey-coloured sedimentary rock is a defining aspect of the city’s coastal environment and features prominently in the architecture of its urban landscape. At a time when market forces are affecting the character and presence of Sydney’s built environment, Legacy of Landscape prompts reflection on this iconic material and its significance to the city.
