Closer is a compelling comment on human connection and social interaction in the digital age.
The installation is constructed as a series of 30 interconnected translucent cubes. Visitors are invited to enter and discover that the interior is a maze, where shadowy silhouettes are seen through walls and the experience is of isolation and disorientation.
After moving through the maze each visitor finds their way to an inner sanctum, capped with a square pyramid and lined with mirrors. In welcome contrast to the previous alien environment, this is a gathering space where people meet and interact.
They see reflections of themselves and other event goers in the mirrored walls, highlighting a message about the connections that we make with those around us and how deeply irreplaceable they are in times of need.
Genuine human interaction cannot be replaced by a screen; being notified of other's activities is not an alternative for physical connection. More is not always better.
