Event Details

Art, at its best, reflects who we are. It explores the limits of the human condition. It can even alter our perception of what it means to be human.

Explore the heart of this idea and what it means to an artist in this special Vivid Sydney edition of Art After Hours, as leading art makers grapple with the Vivid Sydney festival theme: humanity.

Panel discussion: On humanity | 6pm-6.45pm

Benjamin Law hosts a conversation between contemporary artists and Vivid Sydney 2024 contributors Julia Gutman, Leila Jeffreys, Reg Mombassa and Guan Wei as they discuss how they express human connection and culture in their artworks.

Art is a deeply human practice and cultural touchstone. Hear first-hand what this means to these leading artistic voices and gain a fresh appreciation for the importance of art in our society.

Performance installation: Feast for generations | 5pm-8pm

Journey through time and taste with artist Shahmen Suku in this interactive installation inspired by the traditions of Hindu families in Singapore. Feast for generations: recipes as archives delves into the heartwarming rituals of honouring ancestors through the language of food, where every dish carries a story of love, loss and legacy. Immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the artist and his family. Explore family recipes, archival footage and personal anecdotes, and share your own recipes, memories and stories. The installation will be open from 5pm with a special ceremony by the artist at 7pm.

Born in Singapore and based in Australia, Shahmen Suku is an artist whose work explores identity and belonging, including connection with family and community and concepts of home, religion, ritual and culture.
